About: “Spoken Word Artist Writer, Actor, Performer – Originally from the Westside of Chicago, HB has wowed crowds internationally. His accolades include a featured performance at the 1998 City of Phoenix Martin Luther King, Jr. Breakfast., represented the Black community on a national race relations panel for the National Network for Youth in Washington DC in February 1999.
Also In 1999 his life story was featured in an MTV documentary “Taking a Stand Against Violence: Warning Signs.” From there he was invited to go on a national tour with the rock bands Goo Goo Dolls and Sugar Ray where he showcased his poetry. This young man’s poetic talent and genuine nature has allowed him to perform at venues like MTV Studios, Woodstock ’99, Tia and Tamerra’s (“Sister/Sister”) 21st birthday party, 2002 Winter Olympics, South Africa and schools, churches, and conferences all over the US and Canada. He has also shared the stage with superstars like The Last Poets, The Watts Poets, Malik Yusef, Kenneth Cole, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Blues star Billy Branch, Gladys Knight, Brian McKnight, KRS-One, Mos Def, Fredro Starr, and many more.
In order to show appreciation for his undying community service, in 2001 he was recognized as the youngest recipient of the Martin Luther King Living the Dream Award.
HB has been instrumental in the cultivation of the growing poetry scene in the Phoenix area. HB has been the host of “open mics” performance showcases across the nation, including the 2002 Sundance Film Festival in Park City and Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. His acting career includes roles on stage “Jesus Christ Superstar” , “Cut Flowers”, “Our Young Black Men are Dying and Nobody Seems to Care” and “The Gift”. He also wrote poetry for and played a major role in the film “A Love Story” which led him to the roles in films “The Moment…”, “Scratches”, “Hyde Parke”, “Ten”, “The Test”, and “Second Chance”. Along with three close friends, HB has formed the poetry group Enigma Poets and produced the poetry album “23:48:09” . HB is the founder and host of HomeBase: The Poets’ Poetry Set, the largest biweekly cultural and arts event in Phoenix and one of the largest poetry open mics in the country.
